A diverse workforce is critical to a company’s success, but traditional networking does not always produce a diverse candidate pool. Women and ethnic minorities are an integral but underrepresented part of the workforce. They are also an important part of the marketplace. Promoting and increasing workforce diversity can promote positive change by creating a humane workplace that nurtures the positive human potential of all employees. It is also good for business.
The goal of a diversity search is to ensure that qualified women, minorities, and non-traditional prospects are included in the candidate pool for all executive searches. In conducting diversity searches, we concentrate on identifying new targets and sources for candidates, including minority and ethnic-oriented professional organizations, seminars and association meetings, and other networking events.
In 1986, the General Counsel of Wells Fargo asked us to help him transform the legal department of 40 (only 10 percent women and minorities) to a diversified team. Over the next 10 years, we conducted 10 to 12 diversity searches for Wells Fargo's legal department. In recognition of his diversity accomplishments, Wells Fargo's General Counsel was awarded the ABA Spirit of Excellence Award in 1999, and an award by the California Minority Counsel Program in 2000 for diversity in the workplace.
