Candidates Still Do the Craziest Things…

One of my colleagues constantly admonishes - “people are an unstable product” – and in my experience, truer words have never been spoken.

It’s worth re-emphasizing that while the executive search business is one of the best ways to meet and work with fascinating, high-achieving individuals, there is never a shortage of encounters that leave you questioning the basic comprehension, courtesy, and common-sense of your fellow humans – especially when they are sending emails.

Five Ways to Torpedo Your New Position in Less than Two Weeks

The first few days or weeks in a new role and with a new organization are the most critical. In his excellent book, The

First 90 Days, Michael Watkins stresses the importance of getting off to the right start:

"...transitions are critical times when small differences in your actions can have disproportionate impacts on results....Failure to create momentum during the first few months virtually guarantees an uphill battle for the rest of your ...

First Impressions: Not Just for Candidates

The executive search process is a two way street - and while much attention is given to a candidate making the best first impression that they can, it is important for clients to remember that they need to nail that first impression too.

Successful searches are built on a foundation of open communication, and well before interviewing a candidate, a client should provide as much access as necessary to its executive search partner, so that the ...

Candidates (and Clients!) Do the Darndest Things!

During Mardi Gras, you can count on witnessing a myriad of oddities and unusual occurrences...since it's that time of year, we've decided to revisit some recent strange behaviors that we've seen from both clients and candidates alike...

    · Though we counsel arriving slightly early for interviews, we don't advocate taking the same approach a recent reflection, interview, TAGcandidate did. Upon arriving 30 minutes early to meet at a client's corporate headquarters, he ...

All I Want for Christmas Is Snow Tires for the Rental Car

The glowing orange digital thermometer, inset along the rental car's dashboard, indicated that it was -6 degrees Celsius. Its continuous blinking

served to crystallize my thoughts: *Blink* the radio had just announced emergency closure of the airport. *Blink* it was approximately 21 degrees Fahrenheit outside. *Blink* somehow, it was still raining.

In my experience, there are only two places on the planet where it can be significantly below freezing and still rain - Providence, Rhode ...

Seasons Greetings from Rock Springs, Wyoming: How did I end up here?

    Not "a-nice-hot-chocolate-would-just-hit-the-spot" kind of cold, but a "somehow-I-fell-asleep-and-woke-upon-the-Moon" cold, a "Southern-Californian-found-frozen, gnawed-to-irrecognition-by-wolves-and-identifiedby-dental-records" cold.

If you've ever been up at dawn, in the dead of winter, in the heart of Big Sky country, chiseling through an inch of ice grafted to the windshield of your 4-cylinder rental car, desperately trying to get out of town before
a blizzard hits, you know what I'm talking about.

Gloveless and wearing the same suit and woefully inadequate ...

Who cares about the job spec?

A search firm and client can spend 15 minutes or 15 hours drafting a position specification, but it can emerge a useless document either way. A well-crafted spec is the foundation stone upon which a successful search is built. Without the right approach and investment of effort - clearly assessing, defining, and communicating the opportunity - the entire search risks collapse down the road.

"I once had a search firm take a job description our human resources ...
