Blackberry, I Have Loved You, but I Want a Divorce

During the course of a year I bet I meet hundreds of executives.  Last year, I noticed a dramatic increase in the number of executives with an iPhone or other smartphone (but mostly iPhones) instead of a Blackberry. Although I initially dismissed it as a novelty, smartphones other than Blackberry have quickly become mainstream. The iPhone has surpassed Blackberry among business users. As many ponder dumping their Blackberries, it is common to see executives carry ...

You Asked! Best Executive Halloween Costumes of All Time.

Happy Halloween In 2004, Martha Stewart was one of the most sought after costumes, yet it was rated as the worst one for a single woman if she wanted to meet prospective suitors. But then Martha went to the slammer and the costume had to be modified to have a ball and chain. It’s a good thing to be Martha, but not such a good thing to be "Martha Stewart Living Behind Bars." Donald Trump. The Donald costume first appeared in 2002 as a Halloween staple. Be on the lookout for Donald the politician which will have a magnifying glass and Obama’s birth certificate attached. Mark Zuckerberg. Because nothing says social media couture successful executive like a man/child with messy hair, gap hoodie, faded jeans, a terry cloth robe and shower sandals. Hugh Hefner. The Hef costume has been around forever -- Hef has what we call “staying power.” With help of medicinal intervention, he continues to be the highlight of the party and, er, the after party. Bernie Madoff. Bernie Madoff made his appearance in 2008. Scandal, anger, betrayal, hatred, broken trust. Now let the whole party think of you as only your ex would. Ben Bernanke. Fed Chairman and master printer of money. Dressing as Ben this year will be hot, unlike our economy. Oprah – Oprah is gone from network TV but not forgotten. We like her costume in the late 90s that came complete with a wagon carrying 80 pounds of lost fat. Steve Jobs – An easy costume and will, undoubtedly, be highly popular and well received. Black turtleneck, blue jeans, beard, glasses and an iPhone. Tony Hayward – Last year the oily and slick CEO of BP ruled Halloween land if not his own company as he was replaced shortly after Halloween. Headhunter – Our favorite, the headhunter!

I look forward to Halloween parties and get a kick out of how costumes reflect our collective Zeitgeist.   And I am not referring to skimpy French maid costumes or the guy with a sword through his head...though each has its appreciable qualities. My favorites are costumes that are relevant to current events and as such have a limited shelf life.  So prepare to see Casey Anthony, Wall Street Protesters, William & Kate and Angry Birds ...

Five Reasons You Didn't Get the Nod

So often we recruiters (and employers, too) liken the recruiting process to courtship and marriage: the client (company) and candidate go on dates (interviews), commit to walking down the aisle and negotiate

the offer (engagement) and acceptance (marriage). However, sometimes the candidate is all too eager to get hitched without the feeling being mutual. While love is blind, it is a good thing when at least one partner is concerned about a lasting relationship. It ...

Why Twitter Isn't Just for Ashton Kutcher

The Alexander Group has long been a social media fan and frequently posts to Twitter, Facebook and Linked-In

Social media is widely accepted these days as a strong and relevant resource to receive and communicate information and will only become stronger and more relevant over time. Of all the social media outlets available, Twitter is a particularly invaluable tool for both receiving up-to-the-second news and information and creating a brand identity for you and your ...

When You Think You Are Done Learning, It's Time to Go to the Beach...or Have Children

As a parent, I have been humbled. Prior to having children, I thought I knew everything I needed to learn and attained

much of the American dream - college degree, MBA, great wife, a successful career, and a nice house. Why not start a family? "Sure, no problem" I thought. I like kids, they're fun. I had two dogs and they liked living with me and were easy to be around. Having children was a ...

2011 - The Year of the Vacation

I took nearly two weeks of vacation at the end of 2010 that included Christmas and New Years. It was the fi

rst time I had been away from the office for two weeks. At first, I went through a short period of detox - a little shaky, anxious and constantly gazing at my blackberry almost feeling guilty for being out of the office. Apparently I was not alone. According to a survey conducted by Right ...

Don't Treat My Kid Like A Dog!

In my last blog, I wrote of the challenges and joys of traveling with young children. Culturemap, a trendy, online "mapazine," picked up my blog and pushed some hot buttons. Most responses were sympathetic, though several were critical.

Here a few of the comments:

"Here's a novel idea: leave your kids at home! If your child cannot sit still, then don't put him/her on an airplane. We don't want to see ...

The Screaming Baby on Your Last Flight May Have Been Mine

As the summer ends, road warriors (or business executives) can breathe a sigh of relief as they can once again travel without airports and planes filled with an armada of children. Many of us who travel 100+ thousand miles yearly have died a million deaths when seated by a crying baby and roll our eyes when in line behind the "amateurs" and their children. The 10 minute zip to the front of the line for ...

Three Things Executives Should Know about Social Media

I recently spoke with a Chief Marketing Officer who is a guru on leveraging social media for branding and business development. My guru confirmed my long held belief that social media, once thought of as the preferred method of contact of tweens pining for he said/she said drama and popularity, is not only for the benefit of those who have curfews. In fact, a recent study reported that the average Facebook user is 38 ...

Facebook - Beware...Not Just for Friends

Social media has opened a lot of doors and changed and enhanced how we communicate with one another. We are now "friends" and "LinkedIn" with our childhood friends, extended and distant family members and relatives, clients and colleagues. We communicate our identity and "status" and recognize, appreciate, criticize and post pictures of our world, all on a web page. However, as wonderful a tool for freedom of self expression as social media is, it is ...
